James Oliver Curwood was born in Owosso, Michigan on June 12, 1878, the son of James M. Curwood and Abigail (Griffin) Curwood.
The Curwood Castle, built by James Oliver Curwood as a writing studio in Owosso, MI, is located in Curwood Castle Park overlooking the Shiawassee River and is open to the public 1-5 p.m. daily except Monday.

2008-2009 Curwood Festival Board of Directors
The Curwood Festival team is powered by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board of Directors determines policy and oversees every aspect of the organization. Board members are responsible for ensuring that the organization fulfills its mission: "To celebrate the life of author/conservationist, James Oliver Curwood, by organizing, promoting, and conducting family events using the efforts and resources of volunteers, businesses, non-profit organizations and governmental units to enhance the economic and community image of Curwood Country." Char Cornell - President

Char Cornell, President- first became involved with the Curwood Festival in 1989 as a parade announcer in Westtown. In 2001 Char became the Chairman of the Heritage Parade and in 2006, she was elected to the board of directors for a three-year term. The Curwood winter activities of 2008 were organized by Char and were a great success. Char also worked with the Fourth of July Firecracker Parade for almost 10 years. She was one of the original members of the Holiday of Lights Christmas Parade in Corunna. One of Char's greatest passions for over 20 years is being an auctioneer for the Support our Seniors Christmas campaign in Shiawassee County. She is a member of the Durand Eagles, Durand Moose Lodge and Central Michigan Alumni Club. Char is a High School Teacher in the Jackson area at Concord High School. Sherri Bakos - Vice President

Sherri Bakos, was elected Vice-President for a second time in her thirty-one year history with the festival. In past years, Sherri served as Chairman for Food Vendors, Fundraising, and Grand Marshal Committees. She currently serves as Co-Chair of the Heritage Parade responsible for announcing the parade in Westtown and writing the narrative for the parade announcers. She also heads the Grand Marshal Selection Committee and serves on the Curwood Festival Past-President Advisory Council. Sherri is also currently serving as the Interim Office Manager for Curwood Festival. Sherri was the first volunteer to hold all four Executive positions on the board (secretary, treasurer, vice-president and president). Through her Curwood association, Sherri has also served on the Festival Advisory Board of the Michigan Fairs and Exhibitions Association and is a Past Board Member of the Michigan Festivals & Events Association. Sherri was one of the original organizers of the Corunna Fourth of July Celebration and the founder of the Festival of Lights parade in Corunna. Her leadership philosophy is to lead by example and inspire others to higher achievements, Sherri is a 26 year member of the Owosso VFW Women’s Auxiliary. Mike Espich - Recording Secretary

Mike Espich became part of the Curwood Board of Directors in 2005 and has served as its Recording Secretary for the last two years. Mike started with the festival in 1986 as Chairman of the K-9 disc Competitions and is a former state champion in the sport. His local competition has become a favorite competing stop for some of the best teams across the country. In 2004, he brought the Northeast Regional for disc catching dogs to the Festival and in 2007, for Curwood's 30th year celebration, he attracted 42 of the Midwest's top competitors. In addition to K-9 disc, he serves as Chairman of the Royal Mounties and Chairman of Curwood's Micro-Brew Tasting that was introduced in 2008. Mike owns and operates a management-consulting firm and is a member of the U of M Alumni Association, U of M Victors Club and serves as a Trustee for the Corunna Athletic Club. He and his wife Jody have been married 28 years and have one son, Joshua, who recently graduated from the College of Wooster. Debra Adams-Mills - Treasurer

Debbie Adams-Mills, This is the fourth position that she has held on the Board of Directors. She is only the second person within the festival to hold the office of all four Executive positions: President- Vice-President-Secretary-Treasurer. She has been involved with the festival for twenty-four years. Debbie started the Royal Mounties with Doug Scarlett in 1984 and then shortly afterward, took over the position of Queen and Court Coordinator/Chaperone. She has chaired that committee for twenty-two years and is also involved with the Pageant, the Float, and is Chairman of the Sign Committee. When not involved with the festival, she volunteers with the Shiawassee Chapter of the Red Cross as a disaster team member, the American Cancer Society Relay For Life and the Shiawassee County Humane Society. She has been employed by the RESD for twenty-three years in the Career and Technical Education Department. George "Bud" Banker - Board of Director

George "Bud" Banker first became involved with the Curwood Festival in 1990 when his daughter, Kristin, became a 1990 Queens Court Member. He was the Chairperson of the Queen’s Float Committee from 1991 through 1996. During his tenure he served three years on the Board of Directors. Bud was appointed to the board in 2006 for a one-year term and elected to the board in 2007 for a three-year term. He now serves as Chairman of Food Vendors and co-chairs the Queen’s Float Committee as well as Carpet Baggers Row. Bud retired in 2007 as a Lansing police officer and as the General Manager of Leisure Lake Condominium Association. Bud is a graduate of Lansing Community College. Glenda Caszatt - Board of Director

Glenda Caszatt was appointed to the Curwood Board of Directors in November 2008. Currently, she is serving her third year as chairman of the Curwood SAGA Contest Committee with her stepdaughter, Laurie Cook, as her co-chairman. A retired Owosso High School English teacher, Glenda appreciates the opportunity that the Curwood Festival affords her to be able to stay in touch with young people and to be able to read their talented creative work. Lisa Jones - Board of Director

Lisa Jones is a new appointee to the Board of Directors. This will be her first year serving as a decision-maker for the festival and not as a spectator. Very much involved with the Corunna Athletic Club Lisa served as the coordinator for the popular 300 Club Sports Party for six years and as the organizations Vice-President for five years. She is a twelve-year committee member for “Support Our Seniors.” Lisa has been employed as a dispatcher with the Shiawassee County Sheriff Department for 14 years and resides in Corunna with her husband Larry and their daughter Kally. jonesy3@charter.net Phone: 989.627.1427

Lee Mills - Board of Director

Lee Mills has been involved with the festival since 2000. In 2001 he took on the duties of Chairman of the Queens Float. In the spring of 2006 Lee designed and with the help and expertise of Ed Eldred, built the current award-winning float. Lee is also a member of the Pageant committee and is Co- Chairman of the Food Vendors Committee. In 2008 Lee assumed the Chairmanship of Carpetbagger’s Row. Paul T. Rogers - Board of Director

Paul T. Rogers is a ten-year veteran with the festival. He oversees the Sponsor Appreciation Evening, Volunteer Appreciation Party and the Queens Reception and considers Curwood his favorite holiday. Paul is a native of Owosso raised in the hospitality industry. He owns and operates Paul T. Mike Rohde - Board of Director

Mike Rohde is a new appointee to the Board of Directors and radio communications chair. Mike has been active with the Curwood Festival from its inception until 2003 when he “retired.” He was past Chairman of Tent Security for many years and eventually becoming Chairman of Tent Operations. He has been on the Board many times throughout his 27- year involvement. Mike is married to Joanne and they have two children; Jen and Mike Trout and Chris Rohde who all have been active with Curwood Festival in the past. Don W Washburn Jr. - Board of Director

Don W Washburn Jr. Co-chair of Heritage Parade the last 16 years is entering into 24 years of working on the parade. Elected to the board in 2007, this is his second-year of a three-year term Don is by trade an Industrial electrician. He is past Chairman of the Corunna Forth of July Fire Cracker Parade for 15 years. He is past Co-Chairman of the Corunna Festival of Lights Christmas parade for 5 years. Don was one of the original founders of the Corunna Area Ambulance with a total of 18 years of being an EMT. Don has three children, Keri of Dearborn and Kameron and Kazen both of Holt who have helped their father with the parade most of their lives. Don resides with his wife Jackie and their dogs Cody and Sarabella.

Sarah (Adams) Hoover - Parliamentarian

Sarah (Adams) Hoover as the immediate Past-President, Sarah serves as the Parliamentarian to the Curwood Festival Board of Directors. She was first elected to the board in 2001 serving as President in 2007-2008. This will be Sarah’s eighth year as the chairman of the Miss Curwood Festival Queen & Princess Pageant. She also serves as co-chairman of the Queen & Princess Coordination committees and the Junior Mounties, a group she founded in 1997. She has been active with the festival since her parents were Royal Mounties in 1984. Sarah works at Michigan Millers Insurance Company as a field claims representative.
