2007-2008 Curwood Festival Board of Directors
Sarah (Adams) Hoover - President
Sarah (Adams) Hoover, President- was re-elected in September to serve her second term as President. She was first elected to the board in 2001. The year 2008 will be Sarah’s seventh year as the chairman of the Miss Curwood Festival Queen & Princess Pageant. She also serves as co-chairman of the Beautiful Baby Contest, the Queen & Princess Coordination committees and the Junior Mounties, a group she founded in 1997. She has been active with the festival since her parents were Royal Mounties in 1984. Sarah works at Michigan Millers Insurance Company as a field claims representative. She most recently completed several courses at Cooley Law School after receiving her master’s degree in Organizational Leadership from CMU and a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan. She and her husband Jason reside in East Lansing with their dog Mawby and their two cats, Cali & Sophie.
Jamie Zmitko-Somers - Vice President
Jamie Zmitko-Somers, Vice President – is now in her sixth year as a member of the Board of Directors. She is the current chairman of the Princess and Court, acting as their chaperone and schedule coordinator for the past 8 years. Jamie is also the co-chair for the Queen/Princess Pageant. Jamie was a Queen's Court Member in 1996. She is also very active with the Shiawassee County Farm Bureau and served on the board for 6 years. Jamie works at the Michigan Department of Agriculture in the Agriculture Development Division as the International Marketing Manager. Jamie resides in Henderson with her husband Don, who is a full time farmer.
Mike Espich - Recording Secretary
Mike Espich became part of the board of directors in 2005 and serves as an officer for the festival this year as its Recording Secretary. Having worked with the Curwood Festival for 23 years as chairman of the K-9 disc Competitions, Mike is a former state champion in the sport and brings to the festival many years of hands on experience. His local competition has become a favorite competing stop for some of the best teams across the country. In 2004, he brought the Northeast Regional for Frisbee catching dogs to the Festival and in 2007, for Curwood's 30th year celebration, he attracted 42 of the Midwest's top competitors. His most favorite pastime is being entertained & challenged by his 4 yr old Border Collie, Blue, who has yet to make her competition debut. In addition to K-9 disc, he serves as chairman of the Royal Mounties and Curwood's newest event, the Micro-Brew Expo. Mike owns and operates a management consulting firm and is a member of the U of M Alumni Association, U of M Victors Club and serves as a Trustee for the Corunna Athletic Club. He and his wife Jody have been married 27 years and have one son, Joshua, who is a senior and the Drum Major for The College of Wooster, in Wooster, Ohio.
Debra Adams-Mills - Treasurer
Debbie Adams-Mills, Treasurer - This position that Debbie now holds as Treasurer, is the 4th position that she has held on the Board of Directors. She is the only person within the festival to hold the office of all 4 Executive positions. President - Vice President – Secretary - Treasurer. She has been involved with the festival for 22 years. Debbie started with the Royal Mounties in 1984 and then took over the Queen/Court Coordinator/Chaperone. She has chaired that committee for 21 yrs. and is also involved with the Pageant, the Float, and is chairman of the Sign committee. When not involved with the festival, she has been employed by the RESD for 22 yrs. in the Career and Technical Education Dept. and is a volunteer for the Red Cross and the Shiawassee Humane Society. She resides with her husband Lee, and their 2 dogs Coco and Oreo.
Mike Compeau - Owosso City Representative
Mike Compeau First year on the Curwood Board replacing long time city representative Stan Jelenik who retired this year.
Michael has been the Director of Public Safety for the City Owosso since 2003. Michael formally worked for the Genesee County Sheriff Department retiring after 25 years of service. He active member of the Red Cross and serves as on the Red Cross Council and has been the Chairperson the past 2 years for the Red Cross Heroes Campaign. He is a graduate of the FBI National Academy. His hobbies are fishing, hunting, and camping. He and his wife Cindy cindy live in Owosso and have 4 children Derek, Dayna, Amy and Chris.
George "Bud" Banker
George "Bud" Banker first became involved with the Curwood Festival in 1990 when his daughter, Kristin, became a 1990 Queen’s Court Member. He was the Chairperson of the “Queen’s Float” from 1991 through 1996. During his tenure he served three years on the Board of Directors. Bud was appointed to the board in 2006 for a one-year term and elected to the board in 2007 for a three-year term. He now chairs the committee of “Vendors” and co-chairs the “Queen’s Float” as well as “Carpet Bagger’s Row”. Bud is a retired Lansing police officer and retired in 2007, as the General Manager of Leisure Lake Condominium Association. Bud is a graduate of Lansing Community College. He and his wife, Jill, have two daughters. Karistin, resides in Scottsdale, AZ and Kristin, resides in Albuquerque, NM.
Char Cornell
Char Cornell first became involved with the Curwood Festival in 1989 as a parade announcer in Westtown. In 2001 Char became the Chairman of the Heritage Parade and in 2006, she was elected to the board of directors for a three-year term. The Curwood winter activities of 2008 were organized by Char and were a great success. Char also worked with the Fourth of July Firecracker Parade for almost 10 years. She was one of the original members of the Holiday of Lights Christmas Parade in Corunna. One of Char's greatest passions for over 20 years is being an auctioneer for the Support our Seniors Christmas campaign in Shiawassee County. She is a member of the Durand Eagles, Durand Moose Lodge and Central Michigan Alumni Club.
Char is a High School Teacher in the Jackson area at Concord High School. She is also the mother of four children ages 13,12,11 and 8 years old. She resides in Corunna with her children.
Paulita DeWolf
Paulita DeWolf is in her first year as a member of the Board of Directors. She has been chairman of the Arts & Crafts since 2006, after volunteering for the Outpost tent 2004 & 2005. Paulita works for Sagelink Credit Union, and resides in Corunna with her husband, Jim.
Carrie Miculka
Carrie Miculka- Since serving on the 2003 Miss Curwood Festival Court, Carrie has continued to volunteer with the festival. She chaired the souvenirs committee for two festivals and is now the Button and Print Contest chair. She is also an appointed member to the Board of Directors. She is currently working towards a Bachelor’s Degree in Healthcare Administration at the University of Michigan-Flint and enjoys being a stay at home mom. Carrie lives in Owosso with her husband Jason and their son Carter.
Don W Washburn Jr.
Don W Washburn Jr.- Co-chair of Heritage Parade the last 16 years. Entering into 24 years of working on the parade. He is one of the newest members on the Board of Directors and has helped out in other areas as needed. Don is by trade an Industrial electrician working for Comu-Pico Industries in Novi MI. He is past Chairman of the Corunna Forth of July Fire Cracker Parade for 15 years. He is past Co-Chairman of the Corunna Festival of Lights Christmas parade for 5 years. Don was one of the original founders of the Corunna Area Ambulance with a total of 18 years of being an EMT. Don has three children, Keri of Dearborn and Kameron and Kazen both of Holt who have helped their father with the parade most of their lives. Don resides with his wife Jackie and their dogs Cody and Sarabella.
Christie Usher - Office Manager
Christie Usher, Christie has been the Curwood Festival's Office Manager since 2004. She was born and raised in Owosso, enjoying the Festival as a spectator most of her life. Christie became involved with the Festival as a Queen's Court Member in 1997. Soon after moving back to Owosso after college and a couple post graduate years, she signed on to be the Festival's Office Manager. Christie resides in Owosso with her husband and two daughters.
