James Oliver Curwood was born in Owosso, Michigan on June 12, 1878, the son of James M. Curwood and Abigail (Griffin) Curwood.
The Curwood Castle, built by James Oliver Curwood as a writing studio in Owosso, MI, is located in Curwood Castle Park overlooking the Shiawassee River and is open to the public 1-5 p.m. daily except Monday.

2010-2011 Curwood Festival Board of Directors
The Curwood Festival team is powered by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board of Directors determines policy and oversees every aspect of the organization. Board members are responsible for ensuring that the organization fulfills its mission: "To celebrate the life of author/conservationist, James Oliver Curwood, by organizing, promoting, and conducting family events using the efforts and resources of volunteers, businesses, non-profit organizations and governmental units to enhance the economic and community image of Curwood Country." Michael Espich - President

Michael Espich celebrates his 26th year of service with Curwood in the festivals 2010-2011 fiscal year. He became part of the Curwood Board of Directors in 2005, serving as its Recording Secretary from 2007 to 2009 and as its President in 2010. Mike started with the festival in 1986 as Chairman of the K-9 disc Competitions and is a former State Champion in the sport of Disc-Dogging. Since then his local competition has become a favorite competing stop for some of the best teams across the country. In 2004, he brought the Northeast Regional for disc catching dogs to the Festival and in 2007 for the festival's 30th year celebration, the event attracted 42 of the Midwest's top competitors. In 2009 a new local record for competitions was set, lasting nearly four hours with 52 teams coming to the area including six national award winning teams from as far away as Houston Texas. In addition to K-9 disc, Espich serves as Chairman for several events including the annual Curwood Micro-Brew Tasting & Home Brew Competition event he started in 2008 as well as the Bingo and Polka events he started in 2010. Currently, Mike owns and operates a Management Consulting firm based in Owosso and is a member of the U of M Alumni Association, U of M Victors Club and serves as a Trustee for the Corunna Athletic Club. He and his wife Jody celebrate their 30th Wedding Anniversary in March and they have one son, Joshua, who is the Program Director for KZUM Radio in Lincoln Nebraska. Lee Mills - Vice President

Lee Mills has been involved with the festival since 2000. In 2001 he took on the duties of Chairman of the Queens Float. In the spring of 2006 Lee designed and with the help and expertise of Ed Eldred, built the current award-winning float. Lee is also a member of the Pageant committee and is Co- Chairman of the Commercial Food Vendors Committee. In 2008 Lee assumed the Chairmanship of Carpetbagger's Row. Debra Adams - Treasurer

Debra Adams has served as the Queen Coordinator and Chaperone for the past 26 yrs. She has been involved with the festival for 28 yrs, and was one of the first chairs for the group, the "Curwood Royal Mounties". She travels around the state with the festivals' chosen ambassadors spreading the word about our great festival, our wonderful community, and the people who live here. She is known to most of the "Past Royalty" as the "Queenmom". She is also on the following committees: Queen & Princess Pageant, Queens Royalty Reception, and the Curwood Window Decorating Contest. She was President in 1997 & 1998 and has held all of the other offices of the executive board of directors. Debbie also volunteers for the Shiawassee Humane Society, and the American Cancer Society. She has been employed by the Shia RESD for 25 yrs being placed at Perry High School, where she is also the NHS advisor. She lives in Owosso with her husband and two dogs. adams_debra@hotmail.com

Glenda Caszatt - Board of Director

Glenda Caszatt is beginning her fifth year as a Curwood Festival volunteer. A retired Owosso High School English teacher, she has been privileged to continue her love of young people and her passion for reading and writing by serving as chairman of the Saga Contest for four years. Last year, she created a new committee, "From Castle to Computer: Authors of Curwood Country," which follows the tradition of celebrating James Oliver Curwood by recognizing and honoring published authors from Shiawassee County. Glenda served as an appointee to the Curwood Board of Directors during 2008-2009 and she is returning to the Board as an appointee this year. Ben Frederick - Board of Director

Ben Frederick is a lifelong Owosso resident. He and his wife Lydia have a 20 month old son named Devlin and a second child due in March. Ben works as Chief of Staff to Senator Roger Kahn of Saginaw and serves as Owosso's mayor, the youngest person elected to serve in that capacity. Ben and his family are members of First Baptist Church of Owosso and involved in numerous community organizations, including the Owosso Kiwanis Club, Friends of the Shiawassee River, Shiawassee Chamber and Owosso Main Street, In his spare time, Ben enjoys reading, watching classic movies, tennis and spending time with family and friends. Ben's continued goal is to make Owosso a place in which we can all be proud.

Ken McGhee - Board of Director

Ken McGhee has lived in Owosso since 1967. I have two college degrees, one from Lansing Community College and one from Baker College of Owosso. I love the outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, and walking in the woods. I have a number of hobbies, but my passion is the history of the Middles Ages. I am the founder of Shiabruck, a Medieval Reenactment Group (medieval is Italian for Middle Ages). The Shiabruck encampment has been a part of Curwood Festival for over thirteen years. Paul T. Rogers - Board of Director

Paul T. Rogers is Shiawassee County's premiere event planner, caterer, and wedding coordinator. He has worked in the hospitality industry most of his life starting very early working in his family's restaurant. He is proud to be an entrepreneur here in Owosso and has successfully built his passion from a small side project to a full time business. In addition to running a thriving business, he is very involved with the Curwood Festival as this year marks his 11th year as a parade announcer, which provides the crowd with an entertaining and comedic perspective. This year marks his 9th year as Chairman of the Queen's Royal Reception at the Gould House the morning of the parade. He's been honored to serve as a Pageant judge. This is also his 3rd year on the Curwood Board of Directors. He considers Curwood to be one of his favorite holidays. John Smith - Board of Director

John Smith has been involved in the Curwood Festival since 2000 when he won the title of Mr. Owosso while raising money for the Shiawassee Council on Aging. In 2009, he became the Chairman for the Mr. Owosso Contest. Then, in 2010 John was honored by being appointed as a board member. He also has been a long time volunteer for Support Our Seniors. John and his family have also devoted a lot of time fundraising for local charities. John is the owner of Cable Competitors and Cermak TV in Westtown. He resides in Owosso with his wife of 31 years, Debbie, who is a Registered Nurse at Memorial Healthcare. They are the proud parents of two children. Tiffany, 25, is a 2008 graduate of Michigan State University. Tiffany lives in Owosso with her fiance, Joe and their 4 year old daughter, Lilly. Garret, 21, is a 2008 graduate of Owosso High School. He still resides at home. John also enjoy camping with his family in the summer in his motor home. While, John and his son enjoy backpack camping during the winter.
