2009-2010 Curwood Festival Board of Directors
The Curwood Festival team is powered by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board of Directors
determines policy and oversees every aspect of the organization. Board members are responsible for
ensuring that the organization fulfills its mission: "To celebrate the life of author/conservationist, James
Oliver Curwood, by organizing, promoting, and conducting family events using the efforts and
resources of volunteers, businesses, non-profit organizations and governmental units to enhance

Michael Espich - President
Michael Espich celebrates his 25th Anniversary with the festival this year. He became
part of the Curwood Board of Directors in 2005 and served as its Recording Secretary
for the past two years. Mike started with the festival in 1986 as Chairman of the K-9 disc
Competitions and is a former State Champion in the sport of Disc-Dogging. Since then
his local competition has become a favorite competing stop for some of the best teams
across the country. In 2004, he brought the Northeast Regional for disc catching dogs to
the Festival and in 2007 for the festival's 30th year celebration, the event attracted 42 of
the Midwest's top competitors. In 2009 a new local record for competitions was set,
lasting nearly four hours with 52 teams coming to the area including six national award
winning teams from as far away as Houston Texas. In addition to K-9 disc, Espich
serves as Chairman of the Curwood Royal Mounties as well as Chair of the annual
Curwood Micro-Brew Tasting & Home Brew Competition event and is also part of the
festivals Downtown Window Decorating Committee. Mike owns and operates a
Management Consulting firm based in Owosso and is a member of the U of M Alumni
Association, U of M Victors Club and serves as a Trustee for the Corunna Athletic Club.
He and his wife Jody celebrate their 29th Wedding Anniversary in March and they have
one son, Joshua, who is the Program Director for KZUM Radio in Lincoln Nebraska.

Don W Washburn Jr. - Vice President
Don W Washburn Jr. Co-chair of Heritage Parade the last 17 years is entering into 25
years of working on the parade. Elected to the board in 2007, this is his second-year of
a three-year term Don is by trade an Industrial electrician. He is past Chairman of the
Corunna Fourth of July Fire Cracker Parade for 15 years. He is past Co-Chairman of
the Corunna Festival of Lights Christmas parade for 5 years. Don was one of the
original founders of the Corunna Area Ambulance with a total of 18 years of being an
EMT. Don has three children, Keri of Dearborn and Kameron and Kazen both of Holt
who have helped their father with the parade most of their lives. Don resides with his

Lisa Jones - Recording Secretary
Lisa Jones became part of the Curwood Board of Directors as a one year appointee
and is currently serving the first year of a three-year elected term for 2010 and also
serves as the Chairman of the Curwood Festival Sand Volleyball Tournament. Lisa is a
15 year employee of the Shiawassee County Sheriff Department as a dispatcher. She
resides in Corunna with her husband Larry and their daughter Kally. Very much involved
with the Corunna Athletic Club, Lisa served as the coordinator for the popular 300 Club
Sports Party for six years and as the organizations Vice-President for five years. She is

Lee Mills - Treasurer
Lee Mills has been involved with the festival since 2000. In 2001 he took on the duties
of Chairman of the Queens Float. In the spring of 2006 Lee designed and with the help
and expertise of Ed Eldred, built the current award-winning float. Lee is also a member
of the Pageant committee and is Co- Chairman of the Food Vendors Committee. In
2008 Lee assumed the Chairmanship of Carpetbagger's Row. He is employed as the
purchasing agent for Target Industries and resides in Owosso with his wife Debbie. .

Char Cornell - Parliamentarian
Char Cornell first became involved with the Curwood Festival in 1989 as a parade
announcer in Westtown. In 2001 Char became the Chairman of the Heritage Parade
and in 2006, she was elected to the board of directors for a three-year term. The
Curwood winter activities of 2008 were organized by Char and were a great success.
Char served as President in 2009. Char also worked with the Fourth of July Firecracker
Parade for almost 10 years. She was one of the original members of the Holiday of
Lights Christmas Parade in Corunna. One of Char's greatest passions for over 20 years
is being an auctioneer for the Support our Seniors Christmas campaign in Shiawassee
County. She is a member of the Durand Eagles, Durand Moose Lodge and Central
Michigan Alumni Club. Char is a High School Teacher in the Lapeer area at Lapeer
West High School. She is also the mother of four children ages 14,13,12 and 9 years

George "Bud" Banker - Board of Director
George "Bud" Banker first became involved with the Curwood Festival in 1990 when
his daughter, Kristin, became a 1990 Queens Court Member. He was the Chairperson
of the Queens Float Committee from 1991 through 1996. During his tenure he served
three years on the Board of Directors. Bud was appointed to the board in 2006 for a
one-year term and elected to the board in 2007 for a three-year term. He now serves as
Chairman of Food Vendors and co-chairs the Queens Float Committee as well as
Carpet Baggers Row. Bud is a retired Lansing police officer and as the General
Manager of Leisure Lake Condominium Association in 2007. Bud is a graduate of
Lansing Community College. He and his wife, Jill, have two daughters. Karistin, who

Sarah (Adams) Hoover - Board of Director
Sarah (Adams) Hoover was recently elected to a two year term on the board. She was
first elected to the board in 2001 serving as President for the 2007 and 2008 festivals.
This will be Sarah's ninth year as the chairman of the Miss Curwood Festival Queen &
Princess Pageant. She also serves as co-chairman of the Queen & Princess
Coordination committees and the Junior Mounties, a group she founded in 1997. She
has been active with the festival since her parents were Royal Mounties in 1984. Sarah
works at Michigan Millers Insurance Company in Lansing as a field claims
representative. Sarah is also the owner of the Canine Club of Owosso LLC, doggie day
care and more, a business venture she began in November of 2008. She and her
husband Jason reside in East Lansing with their dog Mawby and their two cats, Cali &

Ryan Kuchar - Board of Director
Upon moving to Owosso three and a half years ago, Ryan opened McNeil Street Market in Corunna. Ryan serves as co-chair of the Micro Brew Tasting at the festival. He graduated from New Lothrop in 1998 and attended Ferris State University for Civil Engineering. He enjoys the outdoors, cooking and spending time with family.
Ken McGhee - Board of Director
Ken McGhee has lived in Owosso since 1967. I have two college degrees, one from
Lansing Community College and one from Baker College of Owosso. I love the
outdoors, hunting, fishing, camping, and walking in the woods. I have a number of
hobbies, but my passion is the history of the Middles Ages. I am the founder of
Shiabruck, a Medieval Reenactment Group (medieval is Italian for Middle Ages). The
Shiabruck encampment has been a part of Curwood Festival for over twenty years. I
have grown to love being a part of such a wonderful festival and am honored to be on

Paul T. Rogers - Board of Director
Paul T. Rogers is Shiawassee County's premiere event planner, caterer, and wedding
coordinator. He has worked in the hospitality industry most of his life starting very early
working in his family's restaurant. He is proud to be an entrepreneur here in Owosso
and has successfully built his passion from a small side project to a full time business.
In addition to running a thriving business, he is very involved with the Curwood Festival
as this year marks his 10th year as a parade announcer, which provides the crowd with
an entertaining and comedic perspective. He continues after eight years to coordinate
the Queen's Royal Reception at the Gould House the morning of the parade. He chairs
the Hospitality Tent and he's been honored to serve as a Pageant judge. This is also
his second year on the Curwood Board of Directors. He considers Curwood to be one
of his favorite holidays. Though his contributions to the festival Paul hopes to enhance
