James Oliver Curwood was born in Owosso, Michigan on June 12, 1878, the son of James M. Curwood and Abigail (Griffin) Curwood.
The Curwood Castle, built by James Oliver Curwood as a writing studio in Owosso, MI, is located in Curwood Castle Park overlooking the Shiawassee River and is open to the public 1-5 p.m. daily except Monday.

2011 CURWOOD'S GOT TALENT WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Paige Sink, ten year old former 2010 Curwood Princess Court member from Owosso, won top honors and $100 cash prize for the 17 and under category with her Jazz dance to "Rock This Party." Melissa Grieve, a 19 year old from Saginaw tapped her way to first place and $100 in the 18 and over category dancing to "Swing It My Way."


2011 CURWOOD K-9 DISC WINNERS
The State of Michigan K-9 disc Championships took place Saturday June 4, 2011 as part of the 34th Annual Curwood Festival. In all 57 teams from Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Wisconsin and Ontario Canada, competed for five different titles. In the end Rick Rauwerda and his dog Riff Raff from Harriston, Ontario went home the overall State Title as well as the Freestyle State Title; Scott Jones and his dog Bolareo from North Branch Michigan took the Distance / Accuracy State Title. Owosso's young Lauren Lake took home the Junior Title, while young Andrew Palmer took home the Novice Title.

2011 CURWOOD DOG OF THE YEAR WINNERS
Members of the Shiawassee County 4-H Dog Program from the following clubs (Clever Dogs, Doggie Diggers and Hush Puppies) all worked together to put on the Curwodd Dog of the Year contest Saturday morning, June 5 with the following results -

1st Place in the Obstacle Course competition was Carol Savage from Lowell, MI with her seven year old Aussie named Darla.

1st Place in the Best Trick contest was David Smith from Byron, MI with his 1 1/2 year old Golden Doodle named Rubie.

1st Place in the Dog Owner Look-a-Like Contest was Evelyn Johnson from Owosso with her 4 year old Great Pyrenees Anatolian Shepherd named Elliott.

The three first place winners from each competition went head to head in competition being voted on by the crowd to be awarded the "Curwood Dog of the Year" title.

A big thanks to all the sponsors of the event goes to Pet Supplies Plus of Owosso; Stonegate Veterinarian Housecalls-Dr. Jill Hendersen; Pink Shears Pet Spa-Owner Megan Christensen of Perry; Linda Vnderkarr- Pedicurist at the Nail Boutique; and Paws Down Dog Training - Cheryl Barton.



2011 CURWOOD DUCK RACE WINNERS
Even though the Michigan Department of Natural Resources put the kibosh on dropping the ducks for the 21st Annual Shiawassee-Owosso Kiwanis Duck Race due to undertow currents in the river, three winners were drawn from tickets purchased prior to the event. Winner of the 1st place 50" flat screen TV was Sarah Emerson of Owosso, 2nd place winner of $500 was Denise Adams of Florida and Virginia Frink of Owosso took home the 3rd place prize of $250.

2011 CURWOOD TABLE TENNIS TOURNAMENT WINNERS
Sunday, June 5, saw the first Curwood Festival Table Tennis final matches. A new event introduced this year had double elimination rounds were played May 19 at Owosso High School and from these eliminations rounds came the six finalists who represented three age groups, 11 to 15, 16 to 20, and 38 to 66 (this group resulting from combining several groups with few players).

The final best of three matches were held at the Owosso Fire Department as family and friends gathered to cheer for their favorite players. All three brackets resulted in exceptionally skillful competition which was enjoyable to watch.

Participating in the 11-15 bracket were winner Bryan Kovich and the runner-up Curtis Spencer, both students of Owosso Public Schools.

The 16-20 bracket winner, Sheng Ping Kao (Maggie Kregger) defeated Mitch Kilbourn. Maggie is a senior exchange student at Owosso High and Mitch is an OHS grad now attending college who was a player with the OHS Table Tennis Club a few years ago.

The final bracket, ages 38-66, was won by Brian Buckley of Owosso who defeated Frank Krzciok our only out of town contestant from Chesaning.

The Curwood Festival gratefully acknowledges the contributions of Home Depot which donated materials to rebuild all seven tables for the OHS Table Tennis Club as well as a new paint job and the generous financial support of Civille Real Estate Inc., Health First Pharmacy, Jets Pizza and Owosso Graphic Arts. A special thanks to Elaine Walquist for starting the OHS club and helping run the event from elimination rounds to the final matches.



2011 CURWOOD FAT TIRE RACE WINNERS
The first ever Curwood Fat Tire Race was held at Collamer Park in Owosso on Saturday, June 4. Sponsored by Road ID, The House of Wheels, Construct Elements and Kroger the inaugural event seen nine competitors, ranging in age from ten to forty-one, race the course to earn the fastest time. 2011 YMCA CURWOOD RACE WINNERS
The 35th Annual Shiawassee Family YMCA Curwood 5k Run/Walk, 10k Run, Half Marathon and 1 Mile Fun Run was a huge success! We welcomed just over 50 runners for the first annual half marathon and around 400 total runners! We look forward to seeing everyone next year. Congratulations to all the winners!

2011 CURWOOD SAND VOLLEYBALL WINNERS
With the loss of its Curwood Chairman, the sand volleyball tournament was taken over by the Shiawassee Family YMCA as another fundraiser during the festival. The event, still in its growing stage, had Five teams compete for 2011 on the courts overlooking Hopkins Lake in Collamer Park. The winning team of Shankapotomae consisted of Jace Fritzler, Kyle Gagnon, Nicole Simmons and Kiersten McBrayer.


2011 SHIAWASSEE YMCA PUSH PULL WINNERS
Thanks to all who participated in the Push Pull Competition hosted by the Shiawassee Family YMCA. We all had a ton of fun! Power lifters of all ages mustered up their muscles to compete in the bench press (push) and dead lift (pull) divisions. The mood was light but the weights were heavy. Cody Crites awed spectators with a 555-pound deadlift, while Jim Smith and Jake Senk heaved their way into super-stardom with a 350-pound bench press.

After a year of absence, the Curwood 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament returned in 2011. Hosted by the Shiawassee Family YMCA it was great to see ball handlers passing and dribbling while setting up layups to make bank and jump shots and even some dunk shots. Winners of the Mens Division: Team B.T.Y consisting of Branden Reed, Ashton Porter, Logan Hebekeuser and Dave Williams. Winners of the High School Division: Team Speedy G. Bail Bonds consisting of Nathan Hall, Alex Lynch, Ben Marr and Jordan Cooper.

CURWOOD FESTIVAL SAGA CONTEST WINNERS ANNOUNCED
Kayla Duckert is the Grand Prize winner of the 2011 Curwood Festival Saga Contest. The 12 year old daughter of Tim and Marsha Duckert of St. Johns, Kayla is a 6th grade student at Elsie's E. E. Knight Elementary School, and her teacher is Mr. Craig Thelen. Her short story, selected as the most creative and best written from 139 entries, is titled "A Tree's Life."

First place in the elementary division (4th and 5th grades) will be awarded to Miller Lantis, 11 years old and the daughter of Amy Lantis and C.G. Lantis. Miller is a 5th grader in Mrs. Dana Hook's class at Corunna's Elsa Meyer Elementary School, and her story is "Champion of the Ring." Second place goes to Kaylea Aurand, also in Mrs. Dana Hook's 5th grade class at Corunna's Elsa Meyer Elementary School. Kaylea is 10 years old and the daughter of Kurt and Lora Aurand. She wrote "Grandchildren."

Anna Sophia Heidt, daughter of Brian and Denise Heidt of Owosso, earned 1st place in the junior division (6th - 8th grades) with "Helen and I." Anna Sophia, 13, attends Corunna Middle School and her teacher is Mrs. Rawlings. Delaney Atkinson, 12, is the 2nd place winner with her story, "A House Divided." Delaney's parents are Brian and Heather Atkinson of Laingsburg, and she is home-schooled.

In the senior division (9th - 12th grades), first place goes to 16 year old Zachery Jenks-Western, son of Michelle Bradley and Lyle Western. He attends Owosso High School and his teacher is Ms. Mary Harper. His story is titled "The Wheels of Man." Denae Hummel, 14, and the daughter of Dennis and Patty Hummel of Perry, takes second place with her story, "The Voice of the Ritual Cave." Denae attends Morrice High School and her teacher is Mrs. Darnell.

The grand prize this year is an engraved Apple iPod touch. The first place winners in each division will receive an engraved iPod nano. Second place finishers receive $50.00 cash prizes. Dr. and Mrs. Paul Rangi, Pinecrest Veterinary Hospital, are generously sponsoring this year's contest. Winners will be awarded their prizes at the Curwood Festival Board of Directors meeting at 6:30 Wednesday, April 13 at Owosso's City Hall, and they also will participate in the Curwood Heritage Parade at 2:00 P.M. on Saturday, June 4.

Books & Beans of Owosso has kindly donated ten $10.00 gift certificates to authors of stories earning honorable mention status. This year's gift certificates go to: Josef Waldorf, 10, St. Paul's School in Owosso; Hailey Klenk, 9, Owosso's Bryant Elementary School; Amanda Hall, 11, Corunna's Elsa Meyer Elementary School; Curtis Salander, 10, Owosso's Bryant Elementary School; Hayley West, 13, Perry Middle School; Zac Trinkle, 12, Owosso Middle School; Shyler Stehlik, 12, Ovid-Elsie's E. E. Knight Elementary School; Alexa Koboldt, 15, Owosso High School; James Blevins, 18, Corunna High School; and Gage Sovis, 16, Corunna High School.

Saga Contest Chairman Glenda Caszatt commented, "James Oliver Curwood set a high bar as an author but many area young people are hurdling it with their imaginations and skills and talents." Caszatt also mentioned how grateful the committee members are to the parents and teachers who offer encouragement to the students as well as to the students themselves, most of whom spend a lot of time developing and editing their short stories.



CURWOOD FESTIVAL VALENTINE CONTEST WINNERS

Students, ages 5 - 18, are invited to create a Valentine that centers on the contest's theme: "Which part of the Curwood Festival do you most love?" The Valentine must include a poem with a minimum of 4 lines (no maximum) which may or may not rhyme.

The Curwood Festival is proud to announce the ten winners of its Valentine Contest. Students, ages 8 - 15 and representing six local communities, submitted entries.

The young people were required to create a Valentine that included a poem with a minimum of four lines on the topic, "Which part of the Curwood Festival do I most love?" The five judges based their selections on creativity, quality of writing, appearance, and effort.

The ten winners will be recognized at the March 2 Curwood Festival Board of Directors meeting at Owosso's City Hall. Each student will receive a gift certificate that he/she will trade for a Skerbeck Brothers Carnival armband during the June 2 - 5 Curwood Festival. The armband entitles the winners to a full day of unlimited rides.

The Valentine Contest winners are:

  • Alexis Toppings, 12 years old, lives in Owosso and is the daughter of Teresa Toppings and Roger Stone. She attends Corunna Middle School.
  • Rebekah Riley, daughter of Lynn and Jeff Riley, is 11 years old and from Corunna. She attends St. Paul's School in Owosso.
  • Allison Rodgers of Owosso is 10 years old and the daughter of Tracy and Nick Funk. She is a student at Corunna's Elsa Meyer School.
  • Megan Vondrasek, 10 years old, is the daughter of Matt and Amiee Vondrasek of Owosso. She attends Owosso's St. Paul's School.
  • Mikaela Erin Porubsky, daughter of Greg and Julie Porubsky, is from Bannister. She is 8 years old.
  • Tarryn Blankinship is 13 and attends Owosso Middle School. She is the daughter of Leon and Rachel Blankinship of Owosso.
  • Trendin Chance Cochran, of Corunna, is the 13 year old son of Tami Espich. He attends Corunna Middle School.
  • Sky Poage, 13, lives in Owosso and attends Corunna Middle School. He is the son of Adam and Gerri Poage.
  • Sarrah Holliday is the 12 year old daughter of Heather Edwards. She lives in Lennon and is a student at Corunna Middle School.
  • Georgia Koch is 12 and lives in Vernon. She is the daughter of Mike and Kelly McDonald, and she attends Corunna Middle School.

The judges praised all the Valentines and one commented, "Nearly every single card is clever and creative." The judging committee also named 16 of the Valentines worthy of honorable mention. These students are Damian Greenman, 12; MacKenzie Miner, 13; Raymond Hudak, 12; Kyle Mesh, 12, and Sarah Miller, 13, all of Corunna. The others, all from Owosso, are Allie Yarmuth, 12; Draven Willson, 13; Sidney Voss, 10; James Agell; Madeleine Smith, 10; Allie Moffatt, 12; Rebecca Poljan, 11; Madison Moorman, 15; Gareth Blankinship; Hannah Savage, 10; and Jessica S. Brown, 13.

Committee chairman Glenda Caszatt stated, "What a delight for the adults to see just how inventive, clever, and artistic many students are! Most of the kids put a lot of effort and talent into their work."
