2016 Pedal Tractor Pull Winners
Rainy weather may have made us move our track, but the 3 to 10 year olds didn’t let that stop them from having a great time in the Pedal Tractor Pull at the 2016 Curwood Festival. Kids and tractors go together like peanut butter and jelly. That goes especially for miniature pedal-powered tractors, said Rick Kingsbury.
Kingsbury and Brent Tuma are agents for Farm Bureau Insurance, based in Corunna. Along with staff members Shauna Conrad and Jessica Mitts they serve as the committee for the Kids Pedal Tractor Pull.
"We have sponsored this event for the last four years and it always amazes me when I see the number of city kids that have never even seen a tractor, but they want to do it. Tractors and kids go hand-in-hand, Tuma said"
Seventy-five kids signed up to compete at no cost - thanks to Kingsbury-Tuma Agency.
"It's hard to explain it, but once people see it, they understand," Kingsbury said. "It's just like a big tractor pull, but with this, the kids have to pedal." Participating children sit on a small tractor attached to a weight transfer machine and pedal as far as they can. As they move along the course, weight in the transfer machine slowly makes its way to the front, pushing a brake into the ground that makes it harder and harder to pedal.
Kids say it’s really easy when you start, but gets harder as you move forward. They say they enjoy seeing their parents and others cheering them on. Tuma said "that fun is part of the idea of the pedal pulls. He said pulling allows kids to be active and have the support of family and friends, while knowing that they were the ones who moved the tractor down the track. "It gives the kid a sense of accomplishment and satisfaction of, ‘Hey, I did this on my own,'" Tuma said.
It created a positive atmosphere for children in Owosso, as everyone rooted for the smiling competitors. All the children enjoyed sharing the stories of what the pedal pull was like with their parents and friends after they finished.
Participants who finished in the top four of their age division, broken up by year starting from 3 years up to 10 are:
